You might think that after five centuries of watchmakers' constant tinkering, not much could be done to improve a mechanical movement. But watch companies think otherwise, at least when it comes to one part of the movement, the escapement. During the past 10 years they've brought out a flurry of innovations, some subtle, some extreme, all aimed at perfecting that most vital of timekeeping organs.
The decade began with a bang. In 1999, Omega, the second-largest Swiss watch brand worldwide, announced that it was launching a new type of escapement called the Co-Axial, which in some Omega watches would replace the Swiss lever escapement, which is used in nearly all mechanical watches today even the Omega Seamaster Replica Watch. One day the Co-Axial would become the backbone of the brand, Omega said.
The Co-Axial was the brainchild of the famous British watch maker George Daniels. Its purpose was to exorcise the damaging, oil thirsty demon that has plagued escapements for centuries: friction

The Dual Direct, incorporated in a zany, no crown/no hands watch called the Freak, had two escape wheels that imparted impulses directly to the balance rather than indirectly, as in a Swiss lever escapement. In 2005, Ulysse Nardin introduced an improved version, similar in over all design, called the Dual Ulysse.
With the Dual Direct, Ulysse Nardin started what would become a major trend of the decade, or, more accurately, a trend-within-a trend: silicon escapement components. Silicon is a lightweight, extremely smooth material that does not need lubrication. Ulysse Nardin used silicon for the Dual Direct's escape wheels.
Patek Philippe, Breguet and De Bethune also brought out silicon hair springs. (Ulysse Nardin took the material a step further by launching diamond-coated silicon escapement components in 2007. Two years earlier, the company had introduced a limited-edition watch, the Freak Diamond, with escapement components made of diamond alone.) There have been other escapement developments during the decade. In 2005, Parmigiani Fleurier introduced an escapement with pallet jewels that had an unorthodox shape intended to make the device more efficient. The following year, Audemars Piguet launched an escapement with an old-new design: one based on an escapement that Robert Robin, watchmaker to King Louis XVI, invented in the late 18th century. It provides impulses directly to the balance rather than through a lever and, because it does not generate the lateral friction (caused by the pallet jewels moving across the escape-wheel teeth) of the Swiss lever escapement, does not require lubrication. The same year, Jaeger-LeCoultre also introduced a new, no-lube-necessary escapement; its was based on a detent escapement.
The quest continues. Last year Girard-Perregaux unveiled the design for a constant-force escapement, designed to equalize the strength of the im-pulses delivered to the balance throughout the duration of the power reserve.

Lange & Sonne launched two watches with constant-force escapements: the Zeitwerk (see WatcbTime's August 2009 issue) and the Lange 31. And H. Moser & Cie introduced its Mayu Fume watch, which has an escapement with a double balance spring, named the Straumann Spirale, after its inventor, Reinhard Straumann. Different Band Types and How to Adjust Them...

You may find that the band desires adjustments when you have bought a second user or new watch:

There's some sort of adjustment available in the clasp in the case of a band, and this is thru a pin that is spring-loaded, locking into the clasp's holes. By employing a tool thin enough to press the pin from the outside to release it, you shouldn't have any problem about attempting this adjustment. Watch out, though. These small pins can do a trapeze act and fly to the other side of the room, customarily never to be found again. Before attempting this adjustment, ensure that the watch is on a material so as not to scrape the case or dent the crown.

Straps often have multiple holes so finding a cushty position is mostly straightforward. If not you can always make a new hole using a button hole stitching tool.

Hang on, the band needs links removing.

Some bracelets use push pins and others used screws for attaching links to one another. It's best to leave this to a watchmaker, if you do not have the tools to do that,eg bracelet pin removal tool and watchmakers' screwdrivers. If you have the correct screwdriver, make sure to firmly hold the bracelet before unscrewing the screw, preferably with an expert bracelet holder. That said , it is critical the screwdriver, except for being the right size is also of the right thickness - otherwise you can end up with a broken screw slot.

Push pins, well firstly there are generally small arrows on the underside of the links indicating which way the pin should be pushed out - plain perhaps but worth discussing; some pins are of the split type pure and simple, these are typically found on lower-mid range watches. Again, if you can secure the band and have an instrument which will fit the pin hole right, you can do it yourself. It's enough to get rid of the split pin type with a light tap of the tool. The links are then inserted and the pins replaced from the opposite end to removal - very carefully! If you do not feel comfortable with doing this it is better to look for a a professional watchmaker.

You will have more issues with solid-type pins because these have special collars which should be in the right place on the band. The fit is highly tight, and I recommend that you let a watchmaker do this. If you don't wish to be sorry, it's better to be safe!

Your timepiece and the way to wind it

How do I wind a manual watch?

Try and wind a manual wind watch at the same time each day to have more consistent timekeeping, preferably in the mornings to have optimum power during the day. Wind it slowly and constantly; you may feel the mainspring tighten when it is totally wound. That's your sign that it is good! Don't force it further as this will damage the escapement's components and the mainspring itself.

Remember this. It's sensible to take the watch off when winding a manual wind watch. Why? It's possible that you can put unnecessary strain on the winding stem if you keep the watch on. I have seen people causing a finger under the crown then moving expounded finger backwards and forwards to wind it. This isn't a good idea.

My watch is an automatic, does it need winding?

Well, it does if it has died! Secondly, when using the rapid date advance feature AKA the quickset feature, as a general rule avoid doing so between 8.00pm and say 4.00am - heavy damage can be caused to the date mechanism if this advice isn't heeded. If the watch has stopped then make sure you set the time once thru midnight and well into the safe zone before setting the date.

A long time ago, millions of nervous television viewers from all over the world watched in tense anticipation on the 21st of July 1969 as Neil Armstrong became the first human being ever to set foot on the Moon. At exactly 02:25:20 GMT, one of humanity’s great shared dreams was fulfilled and the three Apollo 11 astronauts successfully laid the cornerstone for NASA’s future lunar missions. However, the day didn’t only make legends of Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins – for on that day the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional became the first and only watch to be worn on the Moon. This is the case back that is typically found on Pre-Moon Speedmaster Professionals (ST145.012 and ST145.022)... I have not seen a ST105.012 at this point, so it's possible that they retain the older twin-angle slope instead of the single angle. If this is the case, it may be the only external way to differenciate between the ST105.012 and the ST145.012 without opening the case. Speedmasters Professional Display Back c.1863:
In the 1996-1997 timeframe Omega and Lemania changed the plating of the c.861 and c.863 from gilt (or a gold-toned plating) to Rhodium (a silver-toned plating) and changed the name of each movement adding a "1" before the number to signify the change. Also in the c.861 movement a single part was changed from a metal component to a plastic one which wear's better and is self-lubricating. In the c.1863 the original metal part is retained because Omega didn't want display-back owners seeing the plastic part. Otherwise the movements are identical to their previous configurations. The Omega Speedmaster Professional "Moon Watch"

Finding a watch that can stand up to an active lifestyle, and still look good and keep great time over the period of many years, is surprisingly difficult. The Omega fans know there's another option which has one of the most interesting backstories in the history of horology.

The Omega Speedmaster Professional lands squarely between a high-end G-Shock and sport model Rolex in terms of price, looks fantastic, and has stood up to some of the most rigorous testing that any watch has ever been subjected to. Not only have Speedmaster Pros gone into space on many occasions, but they have actually been worn outside a space suit on the surface of the moon. Pretty impressive I would say. Even the fake Omega watches look fantastic and are said to be pretty durable for a replica at a fraction of the cost.

Here are the specs:

Stainless steel case and bracelet.
Legendary Speedmaster bracelet with push-button release.
Caliber 1861 manual wind movement; rhodium plated for corrosion resistance; 48-hour power reserve.
Hesalite crystal (a type of plastic similar to Plexiglass -- very shock resistant).
Water resistant to 50 meters, or 167 feet.
Chronograph function (with "small seconds" at the 9 o'clock position), and tachymeter.
42mm case diameter.

As you can see for yourself, the Omega Speedmaster Professional isn't a fancy watch in terms of complications and features. It has to be wound manually, it doesn't have a date display, I wouldn't get it wet beyond a shower, and the crystal is relatively easily scratched. But what it does have is a combination of simplicity, build quality, and well chosen materials that make it one of the most robust and interesting watches currently on the market. Let's take a closer look.

The Bracelet

This was my first experience with the legendary "Speedy" bracelet, and I'm hooked. I've handled a lot of stainless steel bracelets over the years, but I'm pretty sure this is my favorite. It's solid, perfectly machined and built, and completely silent (no squeaks). While it's robust, it's not so massive as to be a burden or feel like an anchor. The clasp design is simple and elegant, and the polished strips that cap the center links give it just a touch of class.

The Movement

Yes, the movement has to be wound manually, and no, there's no date or day or moon phase or GMT hand, but there's something to be said for a simple design in terms of robustness. The Lemania 1861 movement has changed very little over the history of the Speedmaster, and for good reason. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. It is now rhodium plated (which is the difference between the 861 movement, and the 1861 movement) for additional corrosion resistance, but that's about it. So how does it perform by today's standards?

The Crystal

Now that practically scratch-proof synthetic sapphire is the standard in high-end watches, why would anyone want a throwback to the days of plastic? Two reasons. The first is simple aesthetics. Although sapphire is far more scratch resistant, some people simply prefer the look of the Hesalite (it tends to have a look which is more functional than classy, in my opinion). And the second is that although sapphire is very scratch-resistant, it breaks relatively easily. What do I mean by "easily?" Well, don't drop a watch with a sapphire crystal on a tile floor, and if you're going to be swinging your arm around with any velocity, make sure there's no chance your watch might hit anything of any substance. While the Hesalite crystal is certain to pick up minor scratch over the years, there's not a lot you can do to it to actually break it. The other advantage to the Hesalite is that it's very easily polished if the scratches start to bother you, and relatively inexpensively replaced if you really gouge it.

Water Resistance

Now that your typical Casio G-Shock is water resistant down to 200 meters (about 660 feet) and most of the big Swiss brands have watches with screw-down crowns that are rated to 300 meters (about 1,000 feet), 600 meters (about 2,000 feet) and even 1,220 meters (4,000 feet), why would you settle for a mere 50 meters, or 167 feet? Primarily because 50 meters if perfectly sufficient for most of us. If you're a diver or even a frequent swimmer and you don't want to change your watch, the Speedmaster certainly isn't for you. But if you just want to feel confident in a rain storm, rinse your watch off when it's dirty, take the occasional shower with it on, or not have to worry about falling into a pool, then 50 meters is perfectly fine. The Speedmaster has also demonstrated more than enough water resistance to function perfectly well in very humid conditions. Although the replica Omega watches are water resitant they are not water proof. Keep that in mind when purchasing.

The History

So what makes the Omega Speedmaster Professional such a legend? By now, most watch aficionados know that the Speedmaster was worn on the moon, but most don't know the details behind the story.

When the Speedmaster was introduced in 1957, Omega had no intention of sending it into space, but the combination of the chronograph and the fact that it is a manual-wind watch made it a great choice during some of the Mercury missions. Astronauts needed a manual-wind watch since automatic (or "self-winding") watches rely on a weighted rotor which doesn't work well in zero gravity, and they needed a highly accurate chronograph (what is a chronograph) for timing rocket firing sequences. During the Mercury missions, astronauts could wear any watch they wanted, or even no watch at all, since watches were basically backups to the onboard clocks, but during the Gemini and Apollo programs -- which involved EVAs (extravehicular activities) which needed to be timed -- the right watch became far more important.

In 1962, NASA began searching for a more official piece of timing equipment to be worn by Gemini and Apollo astronauts. Several watches were purchased over-the-counter and subjected to rigorous testing including temperatures from 0° to 200° F, 12g's of acceleration, extreme humidity, and a violent vibration test. Some of the Mercury astronauts' instincts had been spot on: the Omega Speedmaster Professional was the only one to pass all of NASA's tests. In 1965, the Speedmaster was declared the official watch of the US space program.

The Speedmaster was subsequently worn by Edward White on the first America spacewalk in 1965, Buzz Aldrin in 1969 during his and Neil Armstrong's famous first lunar excursion, and it was used by James Lovell to time various burns during the ill-fated Apollo 13 flight since the onboard clocks were inoperable.

The Omega Speedmaster thus survived some of the most rigorous testing of any watch in the world as well as the harshest environments and conditions known to man, and even several political attacks by Bulova watch company who insisted that NASA should be using American technology rather than Swiss (the Bulova watches never passed all of NASA's tests like the Speedmaster did). The Omega Speedmaster became such an important and recognizable icon of the space program that Buzz Aldrin's Speedmaster -- the first watch ever on the moon -- was tragically stolen while being transfered along with other equipment to the Smithsonian for display.

Conclusion

At this point, there are several versions of the Speedmaster available. You can now get them with Co-Axial escapements, self-winding movements, sapphire crystals with anti-reflective coatings, date and day-date complications, display casebacks, 100 meters of water resistance, GMT functionality, and all kinds of variations in hand design, case and bracelet materials, dials, and straps. But Omega has continued to offer almost the exact same watch that was chosen by NASA in 1965 which I have now chosen as my first Omega all these years later.

Omega's new Planet Ocean Seamaster finally adopts the Co-Axial escapement, not to mention a natty new colour scheme

Although widely trailed, Omega's introduction of the Co-Axial escapement in 1999 created real waves in the watch industry. Not only was the Co-Axial the first fundamental change to the essential mechanics of timekeeping for nearly two centuries, it was also a highly risky move, since the new escapement although developed and tested by its inventor George Daniels for over two decades had never been exposed to the rigours of volume production and usage. There were more than a few who thought that the extra complexity of the escapement would prove to be a fatal flaw and there were, inevitably, teething problems.

The first watches to have the new escapement were naturally enough from the de Ville collection. Despite the Co-Axial escapement's theoretical advantages of better stability and efficiency, questions remained over the long-term viability of the idea, particularly in terms of reliability; questions which were answered in part by the continued expansion of the concept, with chronograph movements following within two years.

Diving in
This year sees the launch of the first Omega Seamaster Replica Watch carries the Co-Axial movement. Not on first sight a momentous step, the new Seamaster is significant for two reasons. The original Seamasters were launched just over 40 years ago and were Omega's premium watches at the time to the point where they were considered precision watches almost more than diving watches. Although the de Ville has now largely filled this niche for Omega, the company must still have hesitated to risk the reputation of their most iconic watch on an idea they did not entirely trust. By launching a Co-Axial Seamaster, Omega is making a statement of the faith in the technology and, no doubt, enjoying the success of a gamble that might have seriously undermined their reputation.

The calibre. 2500 Co-Axial movement also gives the Seamaster collection an extra layer of horological credibility to add to the practical virtues of the watch; a vital extra in a competitive market. Fake Omega Watches clearly wants people to consider why anyone should pay more than the £1,675 for competition that offers less in a diving watch (no prizes for guessing who Omega has in its sights here).

The Seamaster Planet Ocean will be available in May in two different case sizes (45,5 mm and 42 mm), both designed in sympathy with the original Seamaster 300 models of 1957 most notably through the combination of brushed and polished surfaces. The two have slightly different bezel designs, with finer grooves on the 42-mm model giving a more subtle finish. Omega seems to assume that this is required for the female audience being targeted by the smaller version forgetting perhaps that at this size it dwarfs the original.

Both watches' subaquatic credibility are intact, with all the usual details found on Seamasters, from unidirectional bezel to helium escape valve, and water resistance to 600m, What really marks out these watches however is the optional orange aluminium bezel, which, according to Omega, was chosen only for its exceptional visibility underwater. Last year they discontinued the analog-digital watch from Omega, the X-33. Today I am finally posting the actual review of the watch. Even thought it might be hard to find on the web if you can find one it is one of the best replica watches you will buy.

To recap, the X-33 is one of two watches from Omega space-qualified by NASA. There's the mechanical Speedmaster, worn on the moon, and the quartz X-33, known as 'the Mars watch.' The Seamaster GMT Omega Watch

There are plenty of good reviews of the Omega replica Seamaster GMT watches out there. Of note is CPM's review on TZ Classics #1214. Another good reference is White Rabbit's GMT Watch Manual on TZ Classics #1036.

Therefore, instead of trying to compete with these fine offerings, I am merely going to put up a bunch of scans, and point out where I think there are some outstanding features.

The packaging is well done - an orange leather covered box with a suede-finished interior makes for a very classy presentation - yet quite a bit different from the white-leather "portfolio" case that the Co-Axial DeVille came in. The watch came with a Worldwide Service booklet, an Operating Manual for the watch, an "Operating" Manual for adjusting the strap, and a Chronometer certificate.

The strap is made of rubber, and must be physically cut to fit the wearer. The overall effect is somewhat more restrained than a bracelet's flash, yet with the prominent ridges, is still aggressively sporty while being functionally useful.

While this clearly ensures an excellent fit, this could be a problem if you purchase this watch secondhand from someone with narrow wrists - Ray Purkis, for instance :-). This image shows how the two strap ends are held in the clasp - using the two oversized "spring bar" ends.

The ends fit into tracks on the double-folding clasp like so:

Note that the tracks allow for the overall strap length to be adjusted to fit over a wetsuit. Unlike a folding extension, they can also be used to expand the length by a small increment to allow for additional comfort if one's wrist is pumped up from exercise, for instance.

The case is typical Omega - that is to say, excellently finished: even on an Omega replica watch.

The transition between the brushed and polished surfaces are perfect, and the overall effect of sweeping polished part nicely offsets the brushed surface. While the overall effect is on the flashy side (it is a sports watch, after all), this is a nice level of refinement noticeable only on second glance.
The caseback has a nice engraving of the "Seamonster", with the added "50 Years" inscription. This inscription pays tribute to the original Seamaster, released in 1948, and is thus far restricted only to the GMT's back.

Functionally, the Seamaster GMT has implemented the GMT function following the lead of Rolex and Blancpain - by keeping the 24-hour hand constant. The twelve-hour hand quicksets both forward and backwards, and can be used to adjust the date in both directions as well. Even on the Omega Replica Watches.

The tactile feel of the quick set is of a very solid mechanism, somewhat more so than the Rolex (which I cross-shopped with this watch). Strangely enough, Omega does this by eschewing it's sister company's ETA 2893 movement (which quick sets the 24-hour hand), and uses an Omega-designed quick set cadrature instead. As a whole, I think the Seamaster GMT is an excellent value in the sports watch market, with an outstanding combination of price, styling, and functionality.

Omega Watch and James Bond have had a long and mutually profitable relationship. It used to be a Rolex Submariner watch that Q modified with non-standard complications and handed over to Sean Connery to get him out of tight situations, however starting with Pierce Brosnan in Golden Eye the Omega Seamaster watch became the choice of British spies and they have some of the best replica watches found on the web today. Omegas best watch yet

God only knows how many "generations" of Planet Oceans we've got already. I already thought the 4th Generation was the last model I had to buy, but I was wrong. The rep factories have "milked" the members many times with this watch. They had to make 3-4 attempts to finally get the bigger version right.

Black 45mm Planet Ocean is the watch that Daniel Craig actually wears in "Casino Royale" (before he changes to the standard "Bond Seamaster watch" later in the movie). He's wearing his 45mm PO with a black rubber strap. You can purchase the same watch worn by Bond for a fraction of the cost if you get an Omega replica watch.

When I'm writing this review nobody has yet came out with a rep strap that goes with the "Ultimate", but I believe it's only a matter of time when they're out. Can't really think of a strap that has more sales potential.

How good is it?

The 4th Gen is excellent replica watch. But the "Ultimate" has finally fixed some of the minor shortcomings. Actually there was very little to fix with the 4th Gen. All the improvements belong to the detail department, but are definitely important for the accuracy freaks.

1. The bracelet:
If the 4th Gen had one serious shortcoming it was definitely the questionable bracelet and clasp quality. The SEL had too big gap between the last link. Also the clasp didn't lock up properly, felt loose and left annoying gap between the bracelet. All these have been fixed and the watch sits perfectly on the wrist. The clasp also has correct markings for the 45mm version: "OMEGA Seamaster PROFESSIONAL PLANET OCEAN WATCH".

2. The hands:
4th Gen had too short hands (barely noticeable though). This flaw has been fixed for the "Ultimate". But now they introduced the wrongly shaped Omega ellipse logo. The feet are shaped a'la on the older Seamasters. Otherwise the dial is virtually perfect, and the pearl has been dramatically improved especially on the best replica watches you find on the web today.

3. The HE valve:
I never really swallowed some members' claims that the HE valve was too low on the 4th Generation. I think it was perfectly placed on the rep, because on the smaller Planet Ocean the HE was significantly lower than on the standard Seamaster line. Either way, the HE valve has been raised a bit for the "Ultimate".

4. AR Coating:
4th Gen had light AR coating, which has been improved for this model. It has similar blueish tint on the crystal as the genuine (in certain lighting), but unlike the genuine the crystal looks like it's coated only from the inside. Because of this the tint isn't quite as strong. Still very impressive.

5. Luminosity:
When it comes to lume the 4th Generation is still the best replica watch I've ever seen. "Ultimate" has good lume for a rep, but not quite as good as the 4th Gen (at least my rep). The pearl has a weak lume on the Ultimate, while it glows like a torch on the 4th Gen. But of course... neither can be compared to the genuine, which is especially famous of its luminous abilities.

I've done so many reviews of various really outstanding and revolutionary reps lately (TAG Heuer Link, Seamaster Chronograph, etc.) so it's difficult to impress me anymore. But the "Ultimate" still manages to do it. Besides the feet of the Omega logo on the dial and only one-sided AR coating it's virtually perfect (visually).

I actually find it quite boring that there's nothing more to complain about this watch. It's almost like reviewing a genuine watch. You know... "it's just a Planet Ocean, you have all seen it before".

What was really surprising was how HUGE the "Ultimate" feels. It dwarfs the 4th Generation, which is by no means small. Needless to say it makes any Rolex watches look like a ladies' watch. It weighs amazing 230 grams (around 100 grams more than a Submariner)!!! This is identical with the genuine, so it's definitely not for anorectic wrists.

Here you can see the comparison shot with some other famous Omega replica watch models. As you can see the 45mm Planet Ocean is humongous.

Ultimate 45mm Planet Ocean watch is without a doubt the best ever Planet Ocean, and perhaps even the best Omega watch rep yet.

This is hopefully the end of the Planet Ocean saga, which continued for over a year. The "Ultimate" ranks up with the best replicas ever, but because of its size it's not for everybody.

4th Gen is still excellent choice for people who don't want to wear huge watches. But now it's easier: buyers only need to choose between these two models. The "Ultimate" doesn't make the 4th Generation feel inferior by any means, it's only significantly better in the small details. For some, these details don't mean anything, for others they make the whole world of difference.

Hopefully this review and my 4th Generation review answers all questions about the Planet Ocean reps to the newbies. When it comes to popularity the PO has become on par with Fiddy and Submariner. Perhaps recently PO has even surpassed these two?

THINGS TO REMEMBER

Different metals have varying weights and thus feel different on one's wrist even on the best replica watches on the web.
